Prince Harry announced this morning he believed “No Royal Wants the Throne.”

Harry’s always been a wildcard in this prestigious family, so it’s no surprise he’s happy to share his opinions. I must say I’m quite surprised by his revelations. I liked the idea Prince Charles was caught between two worlds, wishing the Queen would call it a day and at the same time not wanting to lose his mother. I have this distorted view in my head of Charles slipping into the house of lords at night and placing his red arse on the big golden throne. Harry’s claims have ruined that image for me.

Although I can’t say I’m surprised. It seems better to reap the benefits of being part of the royal family while not having to deal with the attention placed on the Queen. I don’t think I could handle the job of King. I could get used to seeing my face on the currency but the other things might get a bit tedious. Surely it’s easier just to lead the rock star lifestyle Harry gets away with.

Harry claims “We are not doing this for ourselves but for the greater good of the people.” I’m not sure what to think about that comment. On one hand, I think yeah, I guess no one wants to be royal and they’re taking just one for the team. Then at the same time, I think to live the life of luxury for the sole reason you were born into the right family, please don’t say you’re doing it for the good of the people. I know it’s not an easy to spend your life in the limelight but I can’t under any circumstances feel sorry for them. I know Harry wasn’t fishing for sympathy, I just think the way he phrased it sounded a little condescending.

I’m not having a go at Harry. I have nothing but respect for the whole family, particularly Harry. I respect the way he’s carried himself over the years, not conforming to what’s expected of him and living the life he wants to live. After all, the duty and responsibility resting on their shoulders is hard to emulate, and it’s impossible to try and understand what they’ve been through all these years.

I’ve always had mixed feelings about the royal family. What Harry said this morning makes me feel better about their attitudes towards the situation. None of them asked to be in that position, and I guess all they can do is make the most of a platform that rests so comfortably in British culture.
